Windows 7 displays different notifications and icons on Taskbar. These icons and notifications can be customized using the Customize icons on the taskbar options. This can be accessed via Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization
Under Taskbar and Start Menu section click on the Customize icons on the taskbar link. This would display the dialog box for changing the icons and notification on task bar.
The different icons and notifications that can be customized includes Action Center, Network, Volume, Windows Explorer, Windows Media Center, Power and any other custom application installed on the system. The behavior of these icons and notification can be set to either show icon and notifications or Hide icon and notifications or only show notifications.
If you want to show the icons and notifications always then you tick the check box Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar available at the bottom
