Display names of month in Excel 2010

This tutorial explains the different ways by which you can display the names of month in Excel 2010. Let us say you want to extract the month from the entered date and display names of the month

1. You can use MONTH function to retrieve the month from a date and then convert the month value in to respective names of month using TEXT function with format text as “mmmm”. If you want to display only first 3 letters of the month then change the format text to “mmm”.

2. Another alternative way to display names of month is to the custom format for that cell. Right click on the cell  where you want to display the names of month and set the custom date format as “mmmm”. Now copy the date value to to the cell applied with custom format.

TEXT(MONTH([DATE]), “mmm”) always returns “Jan” regardless of what month is represented in the [DATE] variable. The fix is simple(r): TEXT([DATE], “mmm”).
