Enable or disable automatic numbered and bulleted list in Word

Microsoft Word users can use automatic numbered and automatic bulleted list by typing * and 1 respectively. By default these features are disabled in Word. Listed below are the steps to disable automatic numbered and bulleted list in Word 2016, Word 2013 and Word 2010

Click on the File menu –> Word Options –> Navigate to Proofing tab available on the left hand side.

Click on the AutoCorrect Options button available under AutoCorrect options section.

In the AutoCorrect window, navigate to AutoFormat As You Type tab and un tick the check box with label as Automatic numbered lists. This would turn off or disable the automatic numbered feature. Similarly to turn off automatic bulleted list, un mark the check box with caption as Automatic bulleted lists.

  • I want to keep my number / bullet lists enabled which they are but when I type “1” to start a number list it does not indent like before. Any ideas?

    i am using microsoft word 2010 and want to eliminate the automatic date and time feature. feature. i cannot find a solution in the auto format or auto format as you type options.
