How to display input message for cell in Excel

Excel 2016, 2013 & 2010 has a feature for displaying input message for a cell which would help users to enter the correct value/data type. This can be achieved using the Data Validation feature available in Excel.

For example if you want to show a message to the user that the cell accepts only numbers, then you can do the following

Select the individual cell or range of cell then click the Data Validation under Date menu –> Data Tools section.

In the following Data Validation screen, navigate to Input message tab and enter the Title and the Input message. Since we want to display the input message, mark the check box with label as “Show input message when cell is selected”.

Click the OK button to confirm and save the changes. When the cell is selected now, it will display the message as “Please enter the cost”.
