How to password protect word document

Microsoft Word users can set password for a word document using the Encrypt Document options. Listed below are steps to password protect a word document in Office 2007, 2010 and 2013

Word 2010 and Word 2013 document encryption feature is available under Protect Document section. This can be accessed via File –> Info menu

Click on the Protect Document drop down arrow and select Encrypt with Password

Encrypt with Password will display the following dialog box to encrypt the document with a password.

The password protection settings in Word 2007 can be accessed through Prepare -> Encrypt Document

On clicking Encrypt document, the following Encrypt Document dialog would be displayed to specify a password for encryption.

After encryption, if any one tries to open the document, they would be prompted with the following dialog box requesting users to enter the password to open file.
