How to find out MAC address?

In this tutorial we are going to see the steps required for finding out MAC address on Mac OS X and Windows PC. MAC address is unique address assigned to each physical interface such as Ethernet card, Wi-Fi, FireWire etc..

There are couple of ways to determine the MAC address on a Mac system. You can use the option available as part of System Preferences or via Terminal command.

System Preferences

Step 1: Click Apple icon and select System Preferences from the list.

Step 2: In the System Preferences window, click Network option.

Step 3: Select the interface for which you want to find out the MAC address.

For example, if you want to find out the MAC address of Wi-Fi adapter then select Wi-Fi and click Advanced button. This would display the following screen with MAC address of Wi-Fi interface at the bottom of the window.

Terminal Command

Terminal Command “networksetup -listallhardwareports” is the quick way to find out the MAC address of all your adapters. In the below screenshot you can see the MAC address for each interfaces.

Finding out MAC address on Windows 8.1

In Windows PC you can get the MAC address by typing ipconfig/all in Command Prompt window.

Step 1: Right click on the Start icon and select Command Prompt from the list.

Step 2: In the Command Prompt window, type ipconfig/all. This should display the physical address of all adapters on Windows PC.
