Find and change default pst file location in Outlook

PST file – Refers to the .pst (personal storage table) filename extension used by Microsoft products.  The file is a locally-stored copy of any message, task, calendar item, etc. from Microsoft Exchange mailboxes.

The default location of archive.pst in Outlook  is C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Outlook Files\archive.pst. You can find the default pst file location in Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2016, 2013 in more than one way. And you can change the file location using the option available as part of Mailbox Cleanup. Listed below are the steps to find and change the archive location in Outlook 2016, 2013 and Outlook 2010

Step 1: Click File menu then navigate to Info menu.

Step 2: In the Account Information screen, navigate to Mailbox Cleanup section and click the Cleanup Tools option.

Step 3: Select Archive from the Cleanup Tools dropdown list. This should display the following Archive window.

Step 4: Navigate to Archive file section and enter the new folder path of the archive.pst.

Step 5: Click OK button to confirm and save the changes.

Some of the scenarios where you will have to change the archive file path or filename are

  • If you are have common backup folder and want to have archive,pst file as part of that then you can change default path for archive file.
  • When you archive file exceeds certain size you can specify a new filename for your pst.
