Change display of recent documents/workbooks in Excel

Microsoft Excel has a feature that allows users to change the number of recent workbooks or documents shown in the Open screen. Listed below are the steps to increase or decrease the recent documents in Excel 2013, Excel 2010 and Excel 2007

The default value for number of recent workbooks is set to 25 and maximum allowed limit is 50

If you feel that 25 is too many and do not want to clutter with lot of recent workbooks then you can reduce this number using the option provided as part of Excel Settings.

Step 1: Click the File and select Options from the menu list.

Step 2: In the Options screen, click the Advanced Tab.

Step 3: Scroll down the Advanced options and navigate to Display section.

Step 4: Now use the option with caption as “Show this number of Recent Workbooks” (In Excel 2010, this will be “Show this number of Recent Documents”). Then click the OK button to confirm and save the changes.

Excel 2013 provides additional setting to change the number recent workbooks displayed under File menu. You can enable quick access section by marking the check box with caption as “Quickly access this number of Recent Workbooks”.

Increase or decrease recent documents in Excel 2007

In Microsoft Excel 2007, there is option available for specifying the number of recently accessed documents. This is available under Excel Options.

Click on the Excel Office button and select Excel options.

In Excel Option window, navigate to the Advanced link available on the left hand side.

Scroll down to the Display section and specify the number of documents that needs to be shown in the Recent Document list in “Show this number of Recent Documents” field. Fewer documents would be shown of the list does not fit on the screen.
