How to preserve leading zero in Excel

Microsoft Excel 2016, 2013 and 2010 allows users to preserve the leading zero by defining a custom format. For example if you are entering a value in excel cell as 08500 and you haven’t specified any custom format then this value would appear as 8500. To preserve the leading zero, right click on the cell and select Format Cells menu option from the context menu.

In the format cells window, defined the custom format as “00000” in the Type field and click Ok to confirm and save the changes.

This would change the display value in the excel cell to 08500, thus preserving the leading zero.
