Understanding Body Fat Index

While BMI is a useful screening tool for body mass index, it doesn't directly measure body fat. Our body fat estimator uses the U.S. Navy Method to calculate your body fat percentage based on circumference measurements.

How to Measure

  • Neck: Measure at the narrowest point, below the larynx
  • Waist: Measure at the navel level for men, at the narrowest point for women
  • Hips (women only): Measure at the widest point of the buttocks

BMI vs Body Fat: What's the Difference?

Your body BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple calculation based on height and weight. While useful for general screening, BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass. This is why athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but low body fat.

For a complete picture of your health, we recommend checking both your BMI and body fat index. Together, these metrics provide better insight into your body composition and potential health risks.
