Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between weight and mass?

Mass is the amount of matter in an object (measured in kg, g), while weight is the force of gravity on that mass (measured in newtons). In everyday use, we often use "weight" to mean mass. Our converter handles mass units (kg, lbs, etc.).

Why are there two different gallons?

This converter uses US gallons. The UK (imperial) gallon is larger: 1 US gallon = 3.785 L, while 1 UK gallon = 4.546 L. Always verify which gallon type is being used for fuel economy or volume measurements.

How do I convert cooking measurements?

Use the Volume category. Common conversions: 1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = 236.59 ml. Note that dry and liquid measurements can differ slightly; this converter uses liquid measurements.

What's the difference between KB and KiB?

KB (kilobyte) = 1,000 bytes (decimal, SI standard). KiB (kibibyte) = 1,024 bytes (binary). This converter uses decimal (KB, MB, GB) which is the standard for storage manufacturers. For RAM, binary units are often used.

Can I convert between different types of units?

No, you can only convert within the same category (e.g., length to length). You can't convert weight to volume unless you know the density of the substance. Each category maintains dimensional consistency.

How accurate are the conversions?

Conversions use standard, internationally recognized conversion factors and are accurate to many decimal places. Results are rounded for display but maintain precision in calculations.

📏 Conversion Tips

  • Metric is Easier: Metric system uses base-10, making mental math simple (1 km = 1,000 m)
  • Remember Key Conversions: Memorize common ones: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 lb = 0.45 kg, 1 mile ≈ 1.6 km
  • Rounding: For everyday use, 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lbs and 1 L ≈ 1 quart are close enough
  • Temperature: Quick estimate: Double °C and add 30 for approximate °F
  • Precision Matters: Use exact conversions for science, engineering, or precision cooking

Metric vs. Imperial Systems

Metric (SI): Used by most of the world. Based on powers of 10. Units: meter, kilogram, liter, Celsius. Easy to scale and calculate.

Imperial: Used primarily in the US. Based on historical measurements. Units: foot, pound, gallon, Fahrenheit. Less intuitive conversions (12 inches = 1 foot, 3 feet = 1 yard).

Pro Tip: When traveling internationally, download unit conversions for the local system. Knowing that 25°C = 77°F or that 100 km/h ≈ 62 mph makes life easier!

Note

This converter provides standard unit conversions using internationally recognized conversion factors. For scientific or engineering applications requiring extreme precision, verify critical conversions with authoritative sources.
